Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga yoga is learned in what’s called a “Mysore style” class where you develop an individualized practice with the support and guidance of a teacher. This is the traditional way of learning the sequence and allows more one-on-one time with the teacher.

Each student is taught at their own pace that is suitable for their situation in life. The student is taught pose by pose and only goes to the level that is safe for that student.

This online class is set to prepare you for an in-person Mysore style class and help you establish a daily routine.

FAQ

Below are some guidelines and frequently asked questions, which will be helpful if you are new to the practice.

WHAT DO I NEED FOR CLASS?

Please bring a mat and 2 hand towels or microfiber towels. If you don’t have a mat, we have some you can borrow for class.

DO I NEED TO HAVE THE SEQUENCE MEMORIZED ON THE FIRST DAY?

No. This will just happen overtime and a teacher will be there to guide you pose by pose through the sequence. See the primary cheat sheet button below to download the sequence.

WHY STUDY WITH A CONSISTENT QUALIFIED TEACHER?

Ashtanga yoga is founded on the concept of parampara-meaning knowledge passed from teacher to student. It is best to study under a teacher who has dedicated themselves to the instruction of the Ashtanga yoga and who has personal daily Ashtanga practice. The teachers personal practice aids in teaching others.

“I CAN’T EVEN TOUCH MY TOES. SHOULD I EVEN DO YOGA?”

Yes! Even more reason to do yoga! This practice is for everyone. All ages, all levels. Yoga is more than just the shape you make with the body. However, if done consistently, it will transform the body as well as the mind.

SHOULD I FUEL UP WITH FOOD BEFORE I COME TO CLASS?

No. It is better not to have any food in the stomach, which is why this practice is traditionally done early in the morning. Please do not consume food at least 2 hours prior to class.

A message from Miguel

I have practiced and studied many styles of yoga over the years, including Ashtanga Yoga. The daily practice is very powerful, and Dean and Erin are world-class teachers. When I was living in Dallas I would drive half an hour every morning at 5 am to practice with them. It's a pleasure to be able to bring their teachings to the Yoga for Punks community. Enjoy!
